Mathilde Piard is French-American and a native of Paris. Before graduate school, she worked for various non-profit and media organizations and has lived in Japan, the U.K., Germany, Belgium and Kenya.

She holds a M.A. in international relations from the University of St Andrews in Scotland, where she wrote for the student newspaper and worked for her college radio station.
