Dragon Mountain

By Fang Cui and Claudia Carlin

Feng Shui is a Chinese discipline that examines the way people interact with their environment. Here are some Feng Shui aspects of the Empire State Building as explained by Zaihong Shen, an architectural consultant. (Take a Feng Shui tour with Shen):

1,250-foot Height: As the tallest building in the city, the Empire State Building is "Dragon Mountain," or "Main Mountain."
Volume, Color, Shape: The interaction of these factors help balance the flow of energy.
Location: This spot on Fifth Avenue between 33rd & 34th streets has a strong energy flow because it is located right in the heart of Manhattan and surrounded by rivers, tunnels and bridges.
Art Deco Lobby: It's very strong in both yin (primarily because not much sun comes in) and yang (because of the dark color and smooth texture of the marble).
Relation to World Trade Center: The Twin Towers had stronger energy than the Empire State Building.
Time: The events of Sept. 11 had a negative influence on the Feng Shui of the building. "That is why some businesses have moved out of the building," Shen says.

People: Human activity is the most important element; the space must be comfortable for the thousands of people who work and visit each day.
