I Spy, Caught on Tape Part 1
One-stop shopping for spy gear

in-hole cameras no bigger than a quarter go undetected inside teddy bears, toys, alarm clocks, aquariums and paintings at the Detective Store International on Christopher Street in Manhattan.

"Suspicions are enough to bring you in, you stop trusting later," says owner Jay Cuenca on why people come to his store. Before opening the detective store in 1988, Cuenca worked as an engineer and salesman.

Cuenca models a pair of sunglasses that contain a hidden camera.

Pin-hole cameras are just one of the many gadgets you will find at the store. Other big sellers include night-vision goggles and tiny audio recorders. Ten to 15 people and three to four businesses, such as detective services and the police, buy spy gadgets from Cuenca each day.

he nanny-cams are our best selling items," says one store technician. A teddy bear, one version of the nanny-cam, that normally retails for $8.95 costs a whopping $700 with the added high-quality pin-hole camera. Nanny-cams are used to spy on your child’s caretaker.

Although many customers want to check up on suspected liars, that is not always the case. His technician, who doubles as a salesman, says the oddest situation he has ever been in was while fixing a hidden camera in a transvestite’s apartment. He was told to hide when a "customer" showed up. The transvestite told the technician he was having the hidden camera installed to document his life for an HBO special.
