By Rob Frehse & the "I Love You" Virus

UEENS DIDN'T STAND A CHANCE. Almost 30 New Media students descended on the area in late April for our full-bodied, hearty report on the "new, new immigrants." Dressed in audio-video equipment and dangling wires and cords, we were easily targeted as the "new, new reporters." As usual, we encountered perturbed interview subjects and nasty weather, but hey, that's how reporters live.

Tales of trouble weren't as common as we thought they might be. One group accidentally deleted all their digital photographs and, on May 4, the "I Love You" virus ate about a half-day's work. We will always remember Andrew Lih's frantic dash to unplug every lab computer before the virus could bore its way through the server.

Our design team seemed to log the most hours in the lab. Sirin Thada, Tamara Melck and Gabriel Sama spent their days and nights chained to Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver programs. I hear that an overnight janitor almost lost a finger trying to dust Sirin's keyboard while she was online.

Executive editors Katherine Lange and "General" Joon-Nie Lau deserve a lot of credit. They worked with managing editor Marla Lehner to craft a solid work schedule for all of us. Organizing a sketchy crew of new media types isn't easy and they repeatedly coaxed us to refine our work, using Pepperidge Farm party mix and three-day-old coffee as bait to keep us working.

So, what did we learn? After reporting, writing and condensing our work, there was still TONS of site construction left. The burden fell on our design team, which casually ignored sunny 88-degree days to focus on the important details of the site. Although their carpal-tunnel conditions may never be treated, their smiles show it was all worth it.
