HE
NO. 7 TRAIN'S 82ND STREET STOP plunks visitors in the midst
of a vibrant commercial district. Latinos, Asians,
Indians, Africans and Caucasians mingle on the area’s wide, crowded
sidewalks, but the neighborhood's businesses cater to the area's
predominantly Latino residents. South
American immigrants, particularly Colombians, have inhabited a majority
of the stately brownstones near the 82nd Street stop for 20 years.
Though real-estate
values in the vicinity are too high for Jackson Heights' most recent
immigrants, its commercial
area is a hub for New York’s most-settled and newest Latino residents.
